Boy Recovers from Autism After Going Gluten Free

Do you think that certain foods can hurt or help a child suffering from autism? There is a woman claiming that, with adiet free of gluten her son recovered from autism.
Every day more and more children are being diagnosed with autism all over the world. New research shows that the mechanism of the increased immune reactivity to gluten in a subset of children with autism appears to be distinct from the one involved with celiac disease.

Senior author Armin Alaedini, Ph.D said: “There is evidence that immune system abnormalities are associated with symptoms in a huge number of individuals with autism.”

Dr. Alaedini also said: “In addition, several studies have evaluated defects in GI barrier function and gastrointestinal symptoms in affected patients. Some have pointed to higher family history of celiac disease, frequency of celiac disease or elevated defense system to gluten among autistic children, but these studies have been inconsistent about such associations”.

The gastrointestinal symptoms are present in almost half of all children suffering from autism. While it is possible that casein proteins and gluten boost the body’s immune response, causing inflammation in the GI tract, it is also a possibility that intolerances and food allergies aggravate the symptoms of autism. It hasn’t been understood why yet, but the GFCF diet does not help all children with autism. Those who have the chronic digestive problems or food allergies seem to benefit the most from the diet.
