We rarely rely on luck in our daily lives and for the most things we decide for ourselves how will be our day. This is what a writer Stephen Covey calls the “90/10 principle” and shows how it works on the obvious examples.





What is the 90/10 rule? The point is that we cannot control only 10% of the stuff in our lives. We cannot prevent objects from breaking or planes that are late, but we can control our reaction. 90% of other events is the result of our response – that is what we do when we are stressed. Here’s the best example of this:



Imagine this: you have a family breakfast and your daughter accidentally spills coffee on your shirt. You get up and yell at her, then yell at your partner because the cup was on the edge of the table. Go into the room to change clothes and when you come back to the table, see the weeping daughter who did not eat breakfast, and she is not prepared for school.
As a result, she is late for the school bus. Your partner is in a hurry to work and you have to drive your daughter to school. In a hurry driving recklessly and realize that you forgot important papers at home. The day started badly and continues to be bad. Cannot wait for it to finish. When you return from work, say hello to your daughter and the partner who are in a bad mood and tension.
Why did you have a bad day? (1) Because your daughter spilled coffee, (2) because the daughter missed the bus so you do have to take her to school, (3) because it was a traffic jam and you are late for work, or (4) because incorrectly reacted in a given situation
The correct answer is number 4. You ruined the whole day for yourself and your family by your reaction. There was nothing you could do about coffee, but you could control your emotions.
Everything could have been different. Coffee spilled on your pants and your daughter burst into tears. You should say “It’s OK, just be more careful next time.” Go into the room, change clothes and pick up everything you need for the job. Go back to the room and see that your daughter waving while going on the bus. Say goodbye to the partner, go to work, arrive 5 minutes early and energetically greet colleagues.
Two different scenarios starting in a similar way. This is all about your reactions to life. Of course, you can always blame someone else for problems and troubles, but did it ever help?



Learn how to respond normally, and you will never have ruined the day in your life. Remember the 90/10 rule and everything will be fine.
Your flight is delayed and the schedule of your day is ruined. Do not be mad at the airport workers because it is not their fault. Take advantage of the time in a different way – read a book or meet other travelers.
If you use the 90/10 principle in your life, you will not regret. In fact it will be quite the opposite – you will be delighted with the results.
