Medical background of cocktails


Nowadays hardly anyone drinks cocktails intended to help health, but without knowing that many of today’s favorite combinations actually originated from early medicine to improve health of people.


According to Matthew Rowley, author of Lost Recipes of Prohibition: Notes from a Bootlegger’s Manual, much of today’s famous cocktails date back to year 77, when Roman doctor prepared his medical preparations which were wine, liqueurs and other spirits included as a ingredients. 



Over the years later, a combination of alcohol with herbs and fruits became increasingly popular for a variety of purposes. Absinthe, for example, in the 1800s was a popular remedy against malaria in France and Switzerland.





In the early 1900s, It was a popular German-Russian-Jewish drink known as Cumene drink, unsweetened brandy with anise, which are served after heavy meals to calm stomach upsets.
